Origins of our Support Approach
Acumen CPG's founder is a consumer-packaged goods (CPG) industry expert with more than 30-years of ideating, developing, and launching new products around the world for brands such as Star Wars, Swiffer, Transforms, Crest, CoverGirl and many others. The work spanned many different disciplines including engineering, design, marketing, packaging, project management, licensing, finance, manufacturing, sourcing and quality. With a deep understanding of what it takes to successfully move from raw idea to finished goods, he saw that significant gaps existed in the support options available to independent inventors and product based startups. This gap included a lack of objective/effective idea vetting, an absence of project structure & planning, and no information on how to sequence, coordinate, and integrate the many different specialist involved. The reason this gap exists is because most all specialty service providers (i.e. patent attorneys, designers, CAD engineers, brand experts, etc.) are very good at their chosen craft but have little to no knowledge of how their work impacts or relates to the larger whole. Those with cross-discipline capabilities are rare, expensive, and often seek an equity stake in an inventor’s idea and require heavy-handed contractual commitments as a prerequisite. Time spent helping frustrated innovators fix and relaunch stalled projects showed us where most missteps were occurring, what help looked like, and how we could best provide support. The solution needed to account for the larger interconnected picture, leverage real-world industry insights, remain affordable, and be adaptable to fit various working styles and senses of urgency. Our two-step approach of building a project foundation and then providing real-time guidance as progress is made is a culmination of many years of thoughtful development and incorporates the voice of our clients.
